The Inside Edge: How to Dress for Success

  • First Impressions Count
When you are interviewing for a position, first impressions make a difference. You’ve got to dress the part to get the job. Eye contact, a firm handshake and a put-together appearance will make you stand out. A suit or professional dress are staples for men and women. Guys – Go ahead and wear a tie. Ladies – Add some polish with jewelry and nice shoes. And for both genders, be sure your hair is recently cut, styled and in place.
  • Be Overdressed Rather Than Underdressed
It doesn’t matter what job you are interviewing for, it is crucial that you look put together. Even if it’s a casual environment and you’ll be wearing jeans every day afterward, the interview should be at least a notch or two above.
  • Err on the Side of Conservative
You don’t have to be in bank attire, but if you are wondering whether you look too “dressy” or not, remember that too dressy can only be seen as going above and beyond to impress, while being underdressed can simply look lazy.
  • Find a Way to Stand Out
Just because you’re in a suit and tie doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to look memorable in the sea of other candidates waltzing in and out of the interviewer’s office. Guys, try wearing a classy tie and handkerchief combo. It will add a splash of color without going overboard. Ladies, get creative with shoes and accessories to stand out without appearing garish.

The Bottom Line: Dress the part to score the job; dress the part to keep the job. Looking good is never a bad thing.
